APA Farm Bill Briefing

SENATE AG COMMITTEE PASSES 2012 FARM BILL- PHI INCLUDED.

Two years ago the newly formed American Pulse Association (APA) brought together every major pulse scientist in the United States to identify the gaps in pulse research. The meeting was held at the USDA/ARS research facility in Beltsville, MD in March 2010. The result of that meeting was a new research strategic vision we called the Pulse Health Initiative (PHI). The scientists told the APA board members that it would take an investment of $125 million to address the gaps in research faced by the pulse industry. The APA has spent the last two years working to achieve this goal.

Today, the Senate Agriculture Committee passed the 2012 Farm Bill out of committee by a vote of 12-4. Contained in this bill is legislative language creating the Pulse Health Initiative in the Research Title of the Farm Bill. The Senate Agriculture Committee authorized up to $25 million per year for each of the next five years of the farm bill. The total authorization for the Pulse Health Initiative in the Senate Version of 2012 Farm Bill is $125 million.

Our own Senator Debbie Stabenow has championed this intitative through the process so far.  Senator Stabenow, who is also Chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has been a very positve voice for all of agriculture.
